Jump Start Your Digestion
We’ve all been hearing about the importance of gut health. But what role does it play in your overall health?
According to Ayurveda, the gut and digestion play an essential role in your immunity. Therefore, having a strong digestive fire, or Agni, is one of the indicators of good health. When you have strong Agni, your body can better absorb and utilize the nutrients in the food you eat.
If you have low Agni, your body cannot take full advantage of the food you eat. So, even if you’re eating wonderfully nutritious food, you’re not getting the bang for your buck.
But how do you know if your digestion is strong, weak, or irregular?
Do you deal with constipation, diarrhea, gas, or bloating? Or do you find yourself having to eliminate several times throughout the day? These can all be signs of issues with your digestion.
Another simple way to find out if you’ve got digestive issues is to look at your tongue in the mirror in the morning when you get up. Do you see scalloped edges on the outer rim? If so, that is a sign that your digestion is irregular.
Also, you might notice a coating on your tongue in the mirror (white, yellow, or maybe another color). That coating is called Ama, and it’s basically toxins or anything that the body cannot digest.
If you see that coating on your tongue, the best thing to do is use a metal tongue scraper (or a teaspoon) to remove it. Scaping your tongue first thing in the morning can help freshen your breath, get rid of bacteria, and also stimulate your digestive organs.
One thing you can do to improve your digestion is to take a simple gut flush with meals. I recommend that you start slowly by trying it once a day, just before dinner.
It’s super simple to make with only three ingredients – fresh lemon juice, ginger, and sea salt.
