Healthier Through the Holidays?

Here we are, getting closer to the end of 2022.

Where are you with the goals you started the year with? Did you lose that 20 pounds, quit junk food, or start getting up 30 minutes earlier to workout?

If you’re like many people, you may have given up on your goals months ago. In fact, 80 percent of people abandon their resolutions by February. If this sounds familiar, you’ve been moving away from your goal rather than toward it.

So, if you’re like all those other people who started the year with good intentions, you might be tempted to wait until the new year to make yourself a priority again. You might think it’s not worth the bother to try anything new now.

You might decide to indulge in Halloween candy, pumpkin pie, eggnog, Christmas cookies, champagne, and all the other treats you associate with the holidays between now and January. Sure, that’s one way to go. But will you get closer to your goals or move away from them?

If you start today, you can get healthier through the holidays instead of beating yourself up whenever you look in the mirror or try to squeeze into an outfit.

You still have more than 60 days to start feeling better. That’s 60 days of making small, manageable changes that add up to you feeling healthier, more energized, and more resilient. You

Tiny changes add up over time–like money in the bank. It’s compound interest. Brushing your teeth is an excellent example of something you do every day that takes just a few minutes. But if you didn’t take that couple of minutes in the morning and at night, it would show up in your smile—and dental bills.

It’s the same with your health. A few minutes every day for the next 60 days will put you ahead of the curve of skipping workouts to sit on the couch and eat potato chips.

Waiting only puts your further away from your goal, and it makes it all the more difficult to get there once you start. So, that 20 pounds you had as your goal may now be 30 or 40. Excess weight often brings other health issues: things like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, inflammation, sleep issues, and aches and pains.

So, don’t wait for an arbitrary day like a new week, month, or year 1st to start. That’s an excuse your brain gives you to keep you comfortable; change can be uncomfortable. But, if you want to feel better in your body, you must step out of your comfort zone a little bit.

If you allow yourself to get comfortable with being uncomfortable, you’ll find that it only lasts a short while. Then, as a bonus, you’ll start feeling more vital and empowered. So, by the time January gets here, you’ll have taken a few giant steps forward with your health.

Imagine what your life will be like when you start today instead of putting your health off again.
